“Titan!” someone said from a long ways away. His brain felt too big for his skull, sharp and achy, and that was the weirdest thing ever because Calder didn’t get headaches. Not that he could recall, at least.

“We have to move you giant idiot.”

Dire. He’d know that voice anywhere – the clipped accent and the annoyance that masked his worry.

Titan forced his eyes open and stared into the face of his teammate. “How long?” he asked around a tongue that felt too big for his mouth.

“Since you passed out? Fuck if I know. But it looks like you couldn’t handle X alone. Ketamine. Yeah, he got me with that once too. I was sick in bed for a day though. That means you’ll be fine in twenty minutes,” Dire said and yanked Titan to his feet.

He stumbled, but regained his balance soon enough. “Why are you here?”

“Cause you-know-who has been buzzing in my ear for five minutes. She said you turned your com off.”

Titan touched the bud in his ear. It was still there, and he let out a breath. At least X hadn’t stolen it and tried to figure out the VS’s secrets with it, if that were possible. But Titan hadn’t turned it off, which meant it either shorted on its own, or X did that after he knocked Titan out. A shiver shot up his spine at that thought.

“Fine, but—”

“But what?” Dire groaned and moved toward the exit. He sported a cat’s tail at the moment, and it twitched with annoyance.

“But X was here for a reason. He thought someone sent me to spy on him. Why don’t we look around and see if we can figure out what he was doing here.”

“I’m not Prophet,” Dire said, but followed Titan nonetheless. His footfalls were as quiet as a cat too, but Titan was used to that by now.

They checked out the upper floors and found nothing but a crumbling old building in need of demolition. Even with his flashlight, Titan tripped over everything, but Dire must’ve used his animal powers to see in the dark because he managed to avoid the debris littered across the floor. By the time they climbed the final flight of stairs, Dire was yawning and grumbling curses under his breath.

Titan turned the corner and stopped. The light swept over a scene he sure as hell hadn’t expected – three men on the floor, each with one of X’s shuriken in their chests. They weren’t breathing. Titan didn’t even need to touch them to know they were dead. The blood that seeped from each wound (right in the heart) was far too much for anyone to survive.

Dire whistled. “I think we found out what X was doing.”

Titan frowned.
